North-Western Shipping Company celebrated in January 2008 it’s 85-year Jubilee, is the biggest company in the Russian water transport system.
   
The North-Western Shipping Company is rich in historic traditions connected with development of shipping in Russia and formation of Saint Petersburg as a maritime capital of the country.
   The company is a successor to the state enterprise North-Western River Shipping Company, established in the year 1923, it was incorporated in 1993.
Organization’s structure: industrial and transportation complex of “Holding” type, incorporating 6 subsidiaries : shipping companie: “North-Western Fleet”; passenger port, shipbuilding ship repairing yards .

   -shipbuilding and ship repair services;

Activity area: single deep system of the European Russia entering the offshore area of the Baltic, North, Mediterranean, Black and Caspian seas.
In the management of the Company there are 125 units of self-propelled cargo transport vessels, with DWT 430 000 tons among them 99 “river-sea-going” freighters, 7 barges, 12 tugs.
   Ships of the company are calling at 300 ports of 30 countries of Europe, Asia and Africa.
   Over the period of 45 years the Company is carrying out transit cargo carriages through the Volga-Baltic Waterway and more than 35 years - through the Saimensky canal.
Variety of cargoes : general cargoes, logs and timber, metals and metalwork, pulp, fertilizers, container cargoes.
   - transportation of timber cargo and saw goods from ports along the route of the Volga-Baltic waterway and ports of Karelia, Scandinavia and the Western Europe;
   - transportation of cargo from ports of Baltic countries: saw goods from Riga and metal from Liepaja - to ports of England and Europe;
   - delivery of metal sheets from England to automobile manufacturing concerns located on the territory of Russia;
   - transportation of ferrous metal and its scrap from Cherepovets to the Saint- Petersburg Sea Port and European and Baltic ports;
   - transportation of fertilizers from the Saint- Petersburg Sea Port to European and Baltic ports and from ports on the Kama riverside to ports of Ukraine;
   - delivery of potassium from Klaipeda to Poland;
   - delivery of crushed stone from quarries on the Ladoga Lake shore (Leningrad region) and in Karelia to Saint-Petersburg, Moscow and Volga riverside ports, for the purposes of residential and non-residential construction;
   - transportation of metal structures from Europe to Saint-Petersburg for construction of the Sea Fasade complex and completion of erection of the flood control structures complex;
   - delivery of equipment and building materials for construction of oil and gas production facilities on the Barents Sea shore;
   - delivery of equipment for construction of oil production facilities on the Caspian Sea shore;
   - transportation of grain from ports on the Lower Don riverside and on the Sea of Azov shore to ports of the Southern Europe.
   The company is transporting annually about 6 million tons of goods.
   First priority for the company is fleet replacement. In 2002-2003 four vessels (“Valdai” project) were led in (“St. Apostle Andrei”, “St. Knyaz Vladimir”, “St. Georgi Pobedonosets”, “Sviatitel` Alexiy”).
   Vessels by project “Rusich” are being built on the enterprises of Volga region ( in: December 2005 - “Rusich- 6”, August 2006 – “Rusich- 10”, December 2008 - “Professor Katsman” ).
In December 2010 Nevsky Shipyard started the construction of a series of universal dry cargo vessels «river-sea type» RSD49.
